Thornhill, Ontario, Canada, May 10, 2005 -- From
Toronto to Tinseltown - GTA Based Publisher Teams Up with Columbia/TriStar
Pictures to Create “Behind the Scenes Lords of Dogtown”
Concrete Wave Editions (a division of Concrete Wave Magazine), based in
Thornhill, Ontario has accomplished something rare in the world of Canadian book
publishing – it has teamed up with a Hollywood studio. “It was all about timing
and the fact that Concrete Wave is so focused on skateboarding – a key
foundation of the film,” remarks Publisher Michael Brooke.
Brooke had initially pitched TriStar Films to advertise their new skateboard
film “Lords of Dogtown” in Concrete Wave Magazine. TriStar, however, had other
plans. “Although we are a niche skateboard magazine, our circulation was just
too small for TriStar” As luck would have it, however, TriStar needed a book
about the making of the film delivered within 90 days. Concrete Wave was at the
right place at the right time and took on the assignment.
“Behind the Scenes” is an unusual book in that it incorporates hundreds of
images along with handwritten notes from the director, designers and actors. The
pressure to deliver on time was unrelenting. Brooke, along with his trusty
designer, Markintosh and the folks at TriStar, including director Catherine
Hardwicke spent hours going over every detail. “It was a pretty amazing
experience – the level of intensity is something that you can’t imagine. Dozens
of people were overseeing this book and I am proud of what we accomplished –
even if it added a few extra gray hairs to my head,” says Brooke.
Set in the 1970’s, the film tells the story of a group of teenage surfers from a
tough neighborhood known as “Dogtown.” The group pioneered a revolutionary new
style of skateboarding. They took their unique “surf style” to empty swimming
pools, pushing themselves higher with each passing session. In the process, they
became skate legends. The book features extraordinary images of Heath Ledger,
Johnny Knoxville, Emile Hirsch, Victor Rasuk and John Hamilton. It also includes
photos of Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Stacy Peralta along with a host of other skate
legends.
