(PRWEB) November 17, 2004 -- For a video celebrating the
remarkable life of Nam June Paik, and the impact of his singular artistic vision
on the art of the late-twentieth century, Zoa Martinez and her team at ZONA
Design, Inc. have created an animated open, close and transitions. Screened at a
rare gathering in the artist’s Soho studio in New York City, Nam June Paik: A
Day In The Life was installed, and ran simultaneously with Paik’s newest
installation, Meta 11, a tribute to the strength of NYC and its citizens after
the unimaginable tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001.
No artist has had a greater influence in imagining and realizing the artistic
potential of video and television than the Korean-born American Video Artist Nam
June Paik. A seminal figure in video art, Paik, through a vast array of
installations, videotapes, global television productions, films, and
performances, has reshaped our perceptions of the temporal image in contemporary
art.
Zoa Martinez, Director/Creative Director of ZONA Design, the New York-based
design studio, herself a multimedia artist, explained her thoughts on the
creation of the animation for the film. “I am a fine artist who just happens to
make my living applying my art in the commercial world so it was a joy to have
our work installed in the same environment and screened with Nam June’s
installation. Our title open for Nam June Paik: A Day In The Life is pure
typographical compositions, combined with graphic old-school TV screens,
reacting to the sound design in 3D space. It is a graphic homage in the digital
realm. The color bars, which are found at the beginning of a videotape, serve as
a graphic punctuation to his life – not an ending, but a beginning, heralding
things yet to come.”
“We supplied some footage that we wanted included in the transition but it was
Zoa who developed the concept. She had a very specific vision and knew precisely
how she wanted certain icons, like the color bars, to be employed in the
animation. I have always been a big fan of ZONA’s work and have thought that Zoa
was a remarkable talent. I can see where she takes inspiration from Nam June’s
work, and the different directions she has taken her own art. This project
provided the perfect opportunity for us to work together and I was very
impressed by Zoa and the ZONA team. They worked diligently, under very great
pressure, and with an extremely short turnaround time. Their contribution to the
film was integral to its success,” added Kenzo Hakuta, Director/Editor of Nam
June Paik: A Day In The Life.
Nam June Paik Studios Director Ken Paik Hakuta stated, “This is the first time
we have worked with ZONA Design. I really loved the opening and think that Zoa
really integrated the many elements of the video. She grasped what Nam June
does, who he is, and the animation feels like one of Nam June’s videos. ZONA
captured his creativity and his sense of fun - it is very Nam June - and he
personally really liked it.”
In addition to Director/Creative Director Zoa Martinez, ZONA’s seasoned team,
known for their distinctive and effective designs, included Executive Producer
Dennis Fluet; Senior Composite Artist Andre Sam and Composite Artist/Editor
Supara Sophonwasu. ZONA utilized ADOBE After Effects, Illustrator and Photoshop
in the execution of this project.
Representing Nam June Paik Studios on the video project were Studio Director Ken
Paik Hakuta, Director/Editor Kenzo Hakuta and DP Jon Huffman. Paik Studios
supplied the music track, appropriated from Nam June Paik’s Meta 11, to which
the animation was cut.
