Posted on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 @ 08:00:00 EDT by Editorial Team

Music A Billboard award-winning songwriter, renowned percussionist, and singer, Paula Jeanine will be performing on May 31st at the BWAC Pier Art Show in Brooklyn, New York.

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 19, 2004 -- The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) launches their Pier Art Show 12, an annual arts festival in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Featuring over 300 artists showing over 1000 pieces, plus live music, slide shows, and an Artists Speak Series, the Pier Art Show is considered a not-to-miss event. One of the more anticipated performers, Paula Jeanine and American Ghazal, can be seen on May 31st at the Pier Show site.

A Billboard award-winning songwriter, renowned percussionist, and singer trained in both jazz and traditional raga vocal disciplines, Paula Jeanine is known for symbiotically melding jazz fundamentals with elements of traditional South Asian poetic forms such as ghazal, thumri, and raga. Ghazal poetry originated in the Middle East and is composed of a series of independent couplets that have a common meter and rhyme scheme. American Ghazal is a concept developed by Ms. Jeanine which uses the lyric style and traditional themes of ghazal as a template, intertwined with a twenty-first century western perspective, to emerge as a fusion of global forms.

With performances from Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, to Goa, India - a recent tour made headlines in every major paper – Paula Jeanine consistently manages to capture the hearts and minds of her audience. “She took everyone by storm. When she sang, the people started to sway and the dancers lost control of themselves.” Rajasthan Times

On May 31, Paula will begin her BWAC show with a performance art piece, Serenade to a Painting, at 1:00 p.m. Moving through three locations housing three paintings, Paula will sing original compositions while dancer, Ariel Bonilla performs. Ariel has been a member of the Martha Graham Dance Company, Pascal Rioult Dance Theater and the Susan Stroman Ensemble. At 3:30, Paula will perform with her whole band.
