10 Ways to Ruin Your Blog with Inferior Domains

Posted on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 @ 18:46:40 EST by xtv

Marketing Management Networking PRSince every website, including blogs, needs a name, Dr. Steve Baba has written a free ebook that explains how to select domain names, which is free at www.seemly.com. Below are the top ten most common mistakes.

March 29, 2006 -- Because blogs usually have no money for paid marketing, blogs rely on publicity and viral, word-of-mouth marketing to attract readers. An easy-to-remember and communicate name is essential for publicity and viral marketing.

Below are the top ten most common mistakes:

1. Buy a .net or .org instead of a .com, and send 10% of your repeat visitors to the dot-com.

2. Since your blog is great, expect people to remember a long domain name such as WorldsGreatestPoliticalBlog.com. This is also using a tag line as a name.

3. Use a number in your domain name, such as 1Blog.com, but not own the spelled OneBlog.com.

4. Give people two opportunities to forget your name. Expect people to remember your name, “World’s Greatest Political Blog,” and also expect them to remember that your domain name is your initials WGPB.com.

5. Make up a new word, such as Viagra, but don’t spend millions on marketing to make the new word a household word, and expect your readers to remember the new coined word anyway.

6. Use less common words or prefixes and use your free TV time explaining your name instead of promoting your blog. One blogger repeatedly has to explain on TV interviews that Kos is short for Markos. Another blogger explains and spells out that his name is “i n s t a” not “instant.”

7. Assume that people can spell difficult words in domain names.

8. Make reader think if your website is Widget.com (singular) or Widgets.com (plural) and send those who guess wrong elsewhere. Make people think about your blog’s subject, but don’t make them think about your domain name.

9. Choose a name with dashes, such as Great-Blog.com, and expect customers to remember that you have the dashes, while your competition, GreatBlog.com, does not.

10. Choose an edgy name without thinking if people will get it or remember it.

The ebook on domain names is available at www.seemly.com, for free. No registration is required. The ebook is a PDF file of approximately 250K. The free ebook is advertising supported.
