 New "vodcast" show is to be made exclusively for iTunes and video iPods for a global audience.
Austin, TX, USA, January 4, 2006 -- The Student Filmmakers Showcase, or “SFS TV,” is coming soon to a portable vodcast near you. The groundbreaking new series will officially begin “vodcasting” January 30th and will be devoted to showcasing student short films from around the globe. Although SFS TV is not the first vodcast (video podcast) available on the iTunes site, it will be the first program of its kind.
“We’re treating SFS TV like what it is, a hybrid between television and a small format vodcast,” explains Executive Producer and creator Juan Garcia. “The difference between SFS TV and current vodcasts is that SFS TV will be consistent in the delivery of weekly episodes and will feature a professional look. Most of the programming available now looks like “home video,” or is geared only to a technology savvy audience. While programs like Photoshop TV are well produced, they only hit a niche audience. SFS TV will have something for everyone.”
Something else that separates the new vodcast from others is the decision to make the show exclusively available for Apple Computer’s iTunes and video iPods. “I believe in the medium and the format more so than other portable devices on the market today. What Apple has done, in my opinion, is to reinvent the television. They created the product, and now it is up to producers to create the content,” says Garcia. And people want content. Inc. Magazine from December 2005 found that cable-a-la-carte and other forms of Video-on-Demand are surpassing standard television and Internet TV viewing.
On top of being a student film showcase, SFS TV is also an internship program where university students collaborate with the show’s producers to be the creative force behind the show. Each student has the opportunity to write, direct, edit, shoot, and more in order to gain critical experience for the future. While the production is based in Austin, Texas, the show incorporates mentors who live and work in Los Angeles, New York, and France.
“We want SFS TV to be the first vodcast that acts like the world’s first universal television program and ignores broadcast boundaries, thereby playing to the largest audience possible. The work that the students and mentors are doing is amazing and SFS TV reflects the passion each member brings to the table,” Garcia explains.
Along with the show’s official launch on January 30th, the program’s website will also be available in Spanish and French in order to accommodate filmmakers around the globe.
SFS TV is an educational and non-profit program designed so in order to accommodate student works that feature copyrighted music and media.
According to Wired Magazine there are approximately 200 million iTunes accounts and approximately 8 million video iPods worldwide.
