The Business Aspects of Semantic Technologies

Posted on Wednesday, September 12, 2007 @ 12:59:47 CDT by xtv

Web Hosting Domains CMSSemanticReport provides business and IT professionals involved in Semantic Technology with a practical, educational, and informational resource.

Los Angeles, CA, USA, September 12, 2007 -- A new monthly online publication called SemanticReport has just published its first issue, serving as a one-stop resource for business executives and practitioners interested in the field of Semantic Technology.

Semantic technologies are a rapidly emerging element of the evolving Web infrastructure which will enable rapid, large-scale integration, identification, categorization and linking of web documents and data. Core standards for semantic web technologies have been developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and are quickly being adopted by tool vendors and application developers around the world.

Editor and Publisher, Scott Koegler, emphasizes that SemanticReport will be focused on making semantic technologies "accessible to regular business people." He says "Semantics has long been studied in academic environments, but the relevance to corporate and consumer markets was relatively insignificant until recently. Now, with the Semantic Web standards and real products becoming widely available, corporate developers have powerful new tools to work with. As they become educated in how to apply semantics in everyday applications, the impact over the next few years will be enormous."

This outlook is echoed by prominent consultant and author of the book "Semantics in Business Systems", Dave McComb of Semantic Arts. "The pace of adoption of semantic technologies is increasing, and mainstream corporate customers need to catch-up to the trend in order to stay competitive. I see SemanticReport as a valuable part of this education process, by translating the value of semantic technologies into the language of business."

SemanticReport is also pioneering rich Web publishing using the same technologies on which it is reporting. The publication has launched a development effort in cooperation with Zepheira, a semantic technology consulting organization, to leverage content management using semantic technology. The result of this collaboration will publish content in traditional Web formats as well as in emerging semantically-enabled Web formats. For example, each key resource on the site (each article, author, topic, etc.) will be connected to a persistent URL (PURL) which offers not only a redirect to the referenced content, but also an RDF representation of the metadata associated with that resource, creating a combination called "rich PURLs." This will become an ongoing example of the business application of semantic technologies in which the community is invited to participate.

Highlights of the SemanticReport launch issue include:
Six Weeks to the Semantic Web - a real-world tale of how Christine Connors of Intuit and Kevin Lynch of Raytheon set out on a six-week, zero-budget quest to harness the Semantic Web;

The Future of the Web - an article by Uche Ogbuji of Zepheira describing a vision for identifiers, relationships, and services as the future of the Web

OwlSight - a technology-review by Matt Fisher of BBN of the OwlSight web-based ontology browser

Case studies - including a report on the impact of semantic services on integrated justice by Alan Greenblatt of Metatomix;

Q & A with Lorenzo Thione, of Powerset and Danielle Forsyth, of Thetus Corporation

Customer Interview with Mary Armijo, of Sierra Nevada Corp. on how they are using ontologies to provide semantic interoperability in a key project.
