BINGHAMTON, NY (PRWEB) May 23 2004-- In a wide-ranging report on the regional economy in 2004, WSKG TV visits both big and small businesses and speaks with business leaders, job seekers and economists who measure the region's economy. WSKG also speaks to scientists whose research could yield exciting new developments as well as economic opportunities.

The Southern Tier Special: Back to Work seeks to answer several questions, including “Is the Southern Tier economy improving in line with the renewed vigor of the national economy?” “Has the 'jobless recovery' phase ended here and are people going back to work?” “Can we expect both growth and stability?” “How has the Southern Tier economy changed and what does it mean for businesses of all sizes?”

Expressing an important theme of the hour-long program, Patrick Doyle, Director of the Greater Binghamton Coalition states, “There's no place in the world that innovates better than the United States, and even in this area we have amazing innovators. Now we have to figure out how to take that technology, turn it into business and keep it here.” The program, produced by Bill Jaker, will also look at how the concept of sustainability is becoming a part of economic planning, especially in Tompkins County.

Other interviewees include: John Greene, a businessman and member of the town board in the Town of Union; Fintan and Eileen Fleming, a brother and sister who run Samscreen in Johnson City; James Houghton, Chairman and CEO of Corning, Inc.; Marty Muggelton, President of the Corning Area Chamber of Commerce; Dr. Bahgat Sammakia, Director of the Integrated Electronics Engineering Center at Binghamton University; Jay McNamara, CEO of Endicott Interconnect; Dr. Susan Christopherson and Dr. Matthew Drennan, Professors of City and Regional Planning at Cornell University; Joseph Kozlowski, Labor Market Analyst for the New York State Labor Department; Richard Dietz, Regional Economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Buffalo; Peter Bardaglio, Provost of Ithaca College and David Saiia, Business Professor at Ithaca College.

The Southern Tier Special: Back to Work premieres Thursday, May 27 at 8pm on WSKG
