Cable wrapping technology for medium voltage power lines (PTL) developed by a Russian company Telecom Transport was used to build a fiberoptic communication link in Cyprus. It took only several days to install a line with a length of more than 2 km. The line has connected a high-voltage substation at a backbone PTL and a telecommunication center at the sea coast.
(PRWEB) May 21, 2004 -- Cable wrapping technology for medium voltage power lines (PTL) developed by a Russian company Telecom Transport was used to build a fiberoptic communication link in Cyprus. It took only several days to install a line with a length of more than 2 km. The line has connected a high-voltage substation at a backbone PTL and a telecommunication center at the sea coast.
The technology for construction of fiberoptic communication links using existing infrastructure of 6-33 kV medium voltage power lines was patented by Telecom Transport one year ago (Russian Federation patent No. 2205486 as of May 27, 2003). A number of organizations all over the world have expressed interest in the new technology. ThunderWorx is the first company to implement it outside Russia.
"The fiberoptic cable wrapping on power lines is very elegant and cost effective solution," said Hermes Stephanou, Managing Director of ThunderWorx. "It allowed us to deploy a fully functional fiberoptic link in less than a week. It would take us several months to build a similar underground link."
