Reader Application to Redefine Reading Experience
Posted on Friday, February 23, 2007 @ 09:12:29 CST by xtv
Print Publishing BooksReaders of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (P-I) now have a more intuitive and reader-friendly way to read the publication's content, thanks to customized digital "news reader" application created by IdentityMine, an interactive design and development firm.

Tacoma, WA, USA, February 23, 2007 -- The new P-I Reader is a PC-based application that allows consumers to view published material in a digital format that emulates the look and feel of its print edition. Users running Microsoft Windows XP or Windows Vista can connect to the Internet and synchronize the latest news from the publication to their desktops, and since the content resides locally, it can then be viewed whether or not a computer is connected to the Internet.

For newspaper and magazine publishers, this technology bridges the gap between the personal reading experience of print and the ubiquitous and interactive nature of the Web. What's more, IdentityMine can rapidly develop a customer reader application like this for nearly any publication hoping to respond quickly to changing reader preferences. The P-I Reader was developed in about one month.

For advertisers, news readers provide an advanced ad delivery method that far surpasses current Web-based advertising technologies. Through the readers, advertisers can gain multiple new opportunities to provide rich, interactive and immersive advertisements during the reading experience. These advertisements can provide proper and effective advertising placement, no matter the size of the window, so advertisers can be confident that their ads are visible and optimally presented.

"Publishers are searching for innovative tools to help them stand out in the growing universe of news and information outlets," said Chad Brown, senior vice president of product and services for IdentityMine. "The news reader experience opens the door to a medium that entices readers with its familiar interface and encourages them to explore the publication's interactive content and advertisements."

IdentityMine developed a news reader application using the Microsoft Windows Presentation Foundation programming platform, a component of the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 for Windows XP and Windows Vista. IdentityMine then applied its strong creative design and interactive development expertise to customize the application to represent the distinct Seattle Post-Intelligencer brand. More information can be found at www.identitymine.com/readers.

The P-I Reader delivers a sampling of the content available in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and on seattlepi.com. With the news reader application, users can download an entire day's edition worth of content in approximately two minutes using a broadband connection. Users of Windows Vista can stay even more current on the Seattle Post-Intelligencer's headlines by downloading the Windows Vista Sidebar application - known as a gadget - which feeds top news to the P-I Reader every 10 minutes.

"This reader delivers a P-I reading experience for on-the-go readers interested in accessing content anywhere, anytime and on their terms," said Roger Oglesby, editor and publisher of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "IdentityMine was a key player in the development of this application. IdentityMine's software development skills and quick response made it possible to create this product in a very short timeframe."

Some of the numerous reader-focused features of the P-I Reader include:

· Content on the go: Users can connect to the Web to synchronize content, and then access the content offline at their leisure, whether at the park, on the train or waiting in a lobby.

· Seamless navigation: News readers make the news as accessible as possible. Viewers can use a keyboard, mouse, D-pad or even their computer's touch screen or remote control to navigate from section to section and story to story.

· Paginated articles: Reading the news in a paginated form is much more interesting and familiar than wrestling with scroll bars. To access the next section, article or page, users only need to press a single arrow key.

· Easier on the eyes: Using advanced technologies developed by Microsoft, the readers create the most comfortable screen-reading experience available. Technologies like ClearType reduce eyestrain, while presenting the news in the adaptable column sizes found in most newsprint experiences - allowing for easier tracking and a more familiar reading environment.

· Follow the news on any size monitor: The news reader automatically adapts to a viewer's screen size to provide the best reading experience for many different Windows-capable devices, such as Tablet PCs, laptops or ultra mobile PCs.

· Keep current with breaking stories: When a user is online, the news reader will automatically synchronize with the latest news from the Web site every hour, so the user will always be kept abreast of the latest developments.

The P-I Reader was launched today as a new service of seattlepi.com. Hearst Corporation, owner of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, has indicated that it is investigating opportunities to incorporate the reader into its numerous other news publications as well. In addition to the P-I Reader, IdentityMine has developed a tailored reader for Forbes.com called the Forbes.com Reader.

A Quick Download Away From News Reader Benefits
The P-I Reader can be downloaded beginning today from http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/newsreader, and the Forbes.com Reader can be downloaded from http://www.forbes.com/partners/microsoft/newsreader. Installing the P-I Reader and Forbes.com Reader requires a simple download. Consumers using Windows XP will automatically receive the necessary enhancement to their system (the .NET 3.0 framework) when downloading the readers. The reader application works on any computer running Windows Vista or Windows XP, from desktop PCs to laptops to tablet PCs. Microsoft intends to broaden support for the application in the future to include platforms for mobile devices and computers running Apple's Mac operating system.
