(PRWEB) May 12, 2004 -- This June, Pushover Productions presents Jean Anouilh’s Antigone. Antigone, a modern conception of Sophocles’ ancient tragedy, is a play about power and rebellion, politics and truth. The plot circles around a single event, a single corpse: the body of Polynices, son of Oedipus and brother of Antigone, has been ordered to remain unburied by Creon, the newly crowned king of Thebes. A soul cannot find peace without burial, and Antigone defies the law, sealing her own fate. The depth of the tragedy is compelling; there are no twists of plot, no chances for hope. The play mercilessly circles a single profound, complex question: What is the value of civil order when the law goes against human decency? What should one die for?

The subtext of Anouilh’s play is considerable. Written during World War II for performance in occupied France, Anouilh’s brilliance lies in the subtle commentary woven into the fabric of the play. While Vichy censors approved its production, French audiences saw in Antigone the value of resistance, no matter the cost. The questions raised by Antigone and Creon remain the important political questions of human freedom, control, duty and sacrifice, even at the expense of life itself.

Pushover Productions was founded in 2002 to allow observant Jews the opportunity to participate in theatre production. Approximately half of each cast is composed of passionate and talented actors who have previously been unable to participate in productions of this nature due to productions and rehearsals scheduled on the Jewish Sabbath (Friday night and Saturday). Providing these skilled actors and production workers this opportunity is the raison d’etre of Pushover Productions, and the skill and dedication brought to the stage is its reward.

Our first production, a staging of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town,” took place at the Studio Space of The Toronto Centre for the Arts in February, 2003. The show was a great success, selling out the majority of its performances. Our second production, of Philip Barry’s classic comedy “The Philadelphia Story” was also successful, running at The Poor Alex Theatre in June 2003.

I have included the production information below, and I hope that your publication will include it when possible. If you require more information or if you would like tickets, please email us at pushoverproductions@rogers.com. I look forward to your response at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely, Michelle Landy Publicist, Pushover Productions
